Exploring the Use of Socratic Seminar Approach on Developing Students’ Speaking Proficiency (A Mixed-Method Research at Eleventh Grade of SMAIT Al-Hanif Cilegon)
This research investigates the impact of the Socratic Seminar approach on students’ speaking proficiency, motivated by the need for more interactive and student- centered methods in English language learning. Using a mixed-method sequential explanatory design, the research collected quantitative data from pre- and post- tests, showing a significant improvement in students’ speaking scores, rising from an caverage of 70 to 78, with a t-test result of 9.999 at α 0.000 significance level. Qualitative data from interviews further supported these findings, highlighting notable progress in fluency, comprehension, and vocabulary, while pronunciation and grammar showed moderate improvement. Students also reported increased speaking confidence, active participation, and motivation to learn. The teacher’s perspective additionally confirmed these developments. The findings imply that the Socratic Seminar approach can effectively enhance students’ speaking skills and foster a more engaging English learning environment. However, the research was limited by its small sample size and the relatively short intervention period, suggesting the need for future research with larger groups and extended implementation time to validate and expand the findings.
