<note>This research analyzes the pragmatics of illocution directive speech acts in the
animated film Leo (2023). The purpose of this study is to identify the types and
functions of directive speech acts used by the characters and to describe the moral
values reflected in these utterances. This research uses the content analysis method.
Data was collected by repeatedly watching the film, transcribing the dialogue,
identifying utterances containing directive speech acts, and classifying them based
on Searle's theory. Each utterance was then analyzed in terms of its function within
the context of interaction among the characters. The research findings indicate that
103 utterances fall under the directive speech act category in the film Leo (2023),
consisting of 46 commands, 15 requests, 22 prohibitions, 18 suggestions, and 2
pieces of advice. Among these, commands are the most dominant type since they are
often used by authoritative characters, such as teachers, to direct or control students’
behavior. Requests and prohibitions are used to maintain cooperation and discipline,
while suggestions and advice aim to influence others in a polite and caring way.
directive speech acts in Leo 2023 not only function as a means of giving directions
or controlling actions but also serve as a way to express empathy and convey moral
values such as honesty, responsibility, kindness, and courage. The study concludes
that directive speech acts play a significant role in reflecting both the social
relationship between speakers and listeners and the educational messages embedded
in the film. It is suggested that future researchers analyze directive speech acts in
other films or different genres to gain a deeper understanding of how language
reflects social interaction and character relationships. Teachers can also use films
like Leo (2023) as authentic materials in pragmatics or speaking classes to help
students recognize various forms and functions of directives in real communication.</note>
