The Effectiveness of Speech Acts in The Garfield (2024) Movies to Enhance Students Speaking Skills

This research investigates the effectiveness of introducing speech acts through the animated movie Garfield (2024) to improve students’ speaking skills at SMPN 1 Puloampel. The study applied a quasi-experimental method with two groups: /an experimental, class, that received treatment; using; the movie and a control class that used conventional methods. The sample consisted of 54 ninth-grade students divided evenly between the two groups, which were divided into 27 experimental classes and 27 control classes. Data were collected through pre-test and post-test assessments focusing on grammar, vocabulary, fluency, pronunciation, and comprehension. The results show that the average post-test score in the experimental class was higher, namely 86,30, compared to the control class, which achieved 73,89. Statistical analysis using an independent sample t-test indicated a significant difference (p = 0.000 < 0.05), while the effect size (d = 1.7) demonstrated a strong impact. These findings suggest that integrating speech acts from The Garfield (2024) movie significantly enhances students’ speaking ability, boosts confidence, and provides a more engaging learning experience. Therefore, movies can serve as effective media in teaching speaking skills within English language learning.
