An Analysis of Illocutionary Speech Acts in Prabowo Subianto’s Speech at the IISS Shangri-La Dialogue 2024
This research analyzes the illocutionary speech acts found in Prabowo Subianto’s speech at the IIS Shangri-La Dialogue 2024, particularly in relation to his remarks on the “Rafah attack.” The study aims to identify, classify, and describe the types and dominant forms of illocutionary acts used in the speech, emphasizing how language functions as a tool of diplomacy and persuasion in political discourse. Using a descriptive qualitative method, the data were obtained through document analysis of the official transcript of Prabowo’s speech. The analysis employed Searle’s classification of illocutionary acts, which includes assertive, directive, commissive, expressive, and declarative acts. The results revealed that all four types except declarative were found in the speech. Assertive acts dominated with 58.1%, followed by directive (22.6%), commissive (12.9%), and expressive (6.5%). The dominance of assertive acts indicates that the speech primarily served to convey Indonesia’s stance, express beliefs, and strengthen diplomatic messages concerning peace, cooperation, and humanitarian values. The findings highlight that political speech not only serves informative and persuasive functions but also reflects a nation’s pragmatic strategy in shaping international perception and promoting peace oriented diplomacy.
