Teachers’ Strategies in Improving English Speaking Skills of Eighth Grade Students in Junior High School (A Case Study at MTs Bani Karim)
This study aims to describe the strategies used by English teachers in improving students’ speaking skills, the implementation of these strategies during the learning process, as well as the obstacles and solutions faced by teachers at MTs Bani Karim. This research employed a qualitative method with a case study approach. The data were collected through observation, interviews with teachers and students, and document analysis of the Lesson Plan (RPP). The findings show that the English teacher implemented four main strategies in teaching speaking: bilingual question-and-answer strategy, storytelling strategy, role-play strategy, and translation-based vocabulary practice. These strategies were applied through pre-activity, whilst-activity, and post-activity stages based on a communicative teaching approach. The obstacles found included students’ limited vocabulary, pronunciation difficulties, lack of confidence, and limited learning media. To overcome these issues, the teacher provided motivation and praise, formed small groups, and used simple media such as vocabulary cards and visual aids. Overall, the strategies applied by the teacher were effective in improving students’ participation, confidence, and speaking ability, and can serve as a reference for English teachers in selecting appropriate speaking strategies.
