The Corelation Between Students’ Vocabulary Mastery and Their Speaking Ability in Performing English Speech (Research at Eighth Grade of SMP Negeri 2 Mancak)


This research aim to investigate the correlation between students’ vocabulary mastery and their speaking ability in the context of English Speech Contests among eighth grade students at SMP Negeri 2 Mancak. The study employs a quantitative correlational research design with a sample of 20 students selected through purposive sampling. Data collection involves vocabulary and speaking tests, which are analyzed using the Pearson Product Moment Correlation formula. The results show a strong and significant correlation between vocabulary mastery and speaking ability, with a correlation coefficient of r = 0.829 and a significance level of p = 0.000. These findings indicate that students with stronger vocabulary knowledge tend to exhibit better speaking performance. The study concludes that enhancing vocabulary mastery significantly contributes to improved speaking skills.
