Exploring the Role of Deixis in English Language Teaching (A Study of Tenth Grade Senior High School Student at MA Al-Rahmah)
This qualitative study investigates the role and use of deixis in English language teaching, focusing on the tenth-grade classroom at MA Al-Rahmah Walantaka, Serang-Banten. The research aims to identify the types of deixis used by the English teacher and to analyze their referent meanings during instructional communication. Using George Yule’s framework, the study categorized deixis into person, spatial, and temporal types. Data were collected through classroom observation and transcribed teacher talk across two sessions. The analysis revealed a total of 73 deixis expressions, comprising 52 person deixis, 5 spatial deixis, and 16 temporal deixis. Person deixis was the most frequently used, indicating its crucial role in addressing and engaging students. The study concludes that deixis is a vital pragmatic tool in classroom discourse, helping teachers manage interaction, direct attention, and enhance clarity. These findings offer practical insights for improving communicative effectiveness in English language teaching.
