Integrating Canva as Digital Storytelling Tools in Learning Recount Text Writing Students Perception (A Descriptive Qualitative at VIII Grade SMPIT Al Izzah Kota Serang)

This study investigates the integration of Canva as a digital storytelling tool to enhance recount text writing skills among 21 eighth-grade students at SMPIT Al-Izzah, Serang City, during the 2024/2025 academic year. Utilizing a descriptive qualitative approach, data were collected through questionnaires and in-depth interviews to explore students' perceptions, the effectiveness of Canva, and the challenges faced. Findings reveal that students generally hold positive perceptions of Canva, with 80-90% agreeing it is engaging, enjoyable, and motivating due to its interactive visual features, such as templates and design elements. Canva significantly improves students’ ability to structure recount texts, enhances creativity, boosts confidence, and aids in understanding text elements (orientation, events, and reorientation). However, challenges include limited time, unstable internet connections, and difficulties understanding Canva’s features, with 52% of students reporting insufficient time and 19% needing assistance. Students suggested initial tutorials, collaborative learning, and additional practice time to optimize Canva’s use. The study concludes that Canva is an effective tool for improving recount text writing, fostering creativity, and reducing writing anxiety, but its success depends on teacher support and structured strategies. These findings contribute to the development of technology-based writing instruction in EFL contexts.
