An Analysis of Figure of Speech in Olivia Rodrigo’s Song by Using Five Stages of Grief in Emotional Expression

This study aims to explore the relationship between linguistic expression and
emotional representation by analyzing the use of figure of speech in song
lyrics. The research employs a qualitative method involving textual analysis
of selected song lyrics. Seven categories of figurative language are
identified: metaphor, hyperbole, irony, personification, metonymy, imagery,
and simile. To ensure the credibility of the findings, validation was
conducted through a checker or validator process involving expert review.
Metaphor emerged as the most frequently used figure of speech, accounting
for 36% of the identified expressions. Less frequently observed were
personification and metonymy (6% each), along with imagery and simile
(4% each). The study highlights the pedagogical significance of figurative
language as a bridge between semantics and emotional literacy. It
underscores how understanding figurative expressions can enrich literary
interpretation and support emotional education within academic settings.
