Breaking Out of the Textbook: Using Giovana’s Tiktok on Learning Listening and Speaking
Listening and speaking are vital yet challenging skills in language learning, often hindered by
limited practice and exposure. TikTok, through creators like Giovana Gogola ("English by
Giovana"), offers an engaging platform for informal learning. The purposes of this study are to
analyze Giovana’s Tiktok content to help students in learning listening and speaking and to
find out how thestudents experience using TikTok Gioava to learn speaking and listening. This
study utilized a qualitative approach with descriptive design. Then this study took place at one
of English learning institutes, located in Serang City. Furthermore the instruments of this study
used observations and interviews. Then the number of participants used in this study was 15
students. Based on the draw from simple random sampling, the partcipants obtained were: 3,
8,12, 10, 5, 9, 14, 1, 15, 6, 11, 4, 2, 7, and 13. Giovana's TikTok videos effectively enhanced
students' listening and speaking by integrating engaging and relatable content into language
learning. Observations showed improved comprehension, vocabulary acquisition, and
pronunciation, with activities like repeated playback and note-taking supporting progress.
Interviews revealed that students found the videos enjoyable and effective, emphasizing the
clarity of pronunciation, fun skits, and real-life examples, which made learning more engaging
and aided in retaining vocabulary and others.
