The Effectiveness of The PQRST (Preview, Question, Review, Read, Summary, and Test) Strategy to Improve Student Reading Comprehension on Narrative Text at Senior High School (A Quasi-Experimental of Students at Grade XI IPS of SMAN 6 Kota Serang)
This study, conducted at SMAN 6 Kota Serang, aimed to assess students'
reading comprehension of narrative texts among eleventh-grade IPS students
and evaluate the effectiveness of the PQRST (Preview, Question, Review,
Read, Summary, and Test) strategy in enhancing their reading skills.
Adopting a quasi-experimental approach with a pre-test-post-test design, the
research compared an experimental group receiving PQRST-based
instruction to a control group receiving traditional instruction. The initial aim
was to understand the baseline reading comprehension levels among
eleventh-grade IPS students. The pre-test scores revealed baseline
equivalence between the experimental (40.4) and control groups (39.8). Post-intervention, the experimental group showed a significant improvement,
achieving an average post-test score of 55, marking a gain of 14.6 points.
Conversely, the control group demonstrated a more modest gain, averaging
45.8 in post-test scores, resulting in an 8.27-point increase. These findings
not only provide insights into students' initial reading comprehension levels
but also highlight the PQRST strategy's efficacy in enhancing narrative text
comprehension. The study underscores the strategy's potential as an effective
instructional approach for improving reading skills among senior high school
students.
