An Analysis of Religious Moderation Values in Indonesian EFL Senior High School Textbooks
English learners comprise a diverse population of varied linguistic, social, and religious backgrounds that not only offer the promise of rich intergroup interaction but also give rise to conflicts, frequently including interreligious tensions. However, there is a scarcity of studies that consider the involvement of character education of Religious Moderation in English teaching materials. This content analysis study aims to explore Religious Moderation Values in Indonesian EFL Senior High School textbooks as one of the domain teaching resources. A systematic process proposed by Krippendorff, involving Unitizing, Sampling, Reducing, Inferring, and Narrating, was undertaken. The data sparked a discussion on the values of Religious Moderation and how they are presented in Indonesian EFL Senior High School textbooks. The results reveal that each textbook contains a different number of values with 30 occurrences in “Bahasa Inggris: Work in Progress” for grade X, 71 occurrences in “Bahasa Inggris: English for Change” for grade XI, and 90 occurrences in “Bahasa Inggris: Life Today” for grade XII. The textbooks for Grades XI and XII provide students with values such as At-Tawassuth (Taking the Middle Path), Al-I’tidal (Straight and Firm), At-Tasamuh (Tolerance), Asy-Syura (Deliberation), Al-Ishlah (Reform), Al-Qudwah (Role Model), Al-Muwathanah (Citizenship and Nationalism), and Al’la Unf (Anti-violence), with the absence of I’tiraf Al’Unf (Culture-friendly). Whereas, the textbook for Grade X does not provide students with two values: Al-Muwathanah (Citizenship and Nationalism) and I’tiraf Al’Unf (Culture-friendly). Furthermore, it was found that Indonesian EFL Senior High School textbooks tend to represent these values implicitly rather than explicitly through each indicator.
