An Analysis of Students’ Speaking Skills on “Job Interview” Material (A Descriptive Qualitative Research at 11th Grade in SMKN 1 Kota Serang)


One essential skill in learning English is speaking. This study aims to investigate students’ speaking skills of job interview material and find out which aspect is the most weaknesses that often appear among 5 aspects. The researcher used qualitative descriptive design, with speaking rubric and interview as the instrument of data collection. By taking respondents of second grade students of SMKN 1 Kota Serang. The data analysis in this study whose steps are divided into three procedures; data reduction, data display, conclusion and verification. The findings of this study show that in terms of students' speaking skills in job interviews, 2 students got the excellent category, 4 students got the very good category, 21 students got the good category, 7 students got the poor category, and 2 students got the very poor category. Students speaking skills of job interview average score is 2,87 and they are categorized as “good”. Students’ grammar score is 3,19 which enable them to construct sentences with correct structures that the interviewer quickly understands. Students’ vocabulary score is 3,03 they can master vocabulary relevant to the job interview context and use appropriate and professional terms to answer questions. Students’ comprehension score is 3,13 because most of them understand and they can provide relevant and targeted answer. Students’ fluency score is 2,72 because overall they could answer the questions smoothly although some students stammered and paused. Students’ pronunciation score is 2,29 because because some students mispronounce some words, but overall their pronunciation were good and pronunciation is the most dominant weakness of the students.
