<note>The aim of this research is to identify the difficulties in reading skills faced by the eight-grade students and the strategies used to overcome students' difficulties in reading skills. This research uses qualitative methods with instruments in the form of tests and interviews. Fifteen students from MTs Al-Mu'awanah contributed to this research. The results of research based on tests show that 86.7% of students experience difficulty in identifying references. Second, 60% of students had difficulty making conclusions. Third, 51.2% of students face difficulties in interpreting vocabulary. Fourth, 33.3% of students found it difficult to determine the main idea. Fifth, 22.7% of students had difficulty detailing information. Meanwhile, based on interviews with students, there are five difficulties they face, namely limited knowledge of vocabulary, difficulty in drawing conclusions, inadequate use of effective reading techniques, obstacles in processing information, and low interest in reading. The strategies used to overcome students' problems in reading skills include 1) cognitive strategies and 2) metacognitive strategies. Based on the results, the researcher concluded that students faced several difficulties in reading skills. To overcome these difficulties, cognitive strategies and metacognitive strategies are effective approaches to overcome the challenges students face in reading skills.</note>
