<note>This purpose of this research was identify the types of students spelling errors 
using dictogloss technique in writing narrative text. The aims of this research are to 
identified the type of spelling errors in writing skill using dictogloss techniques and 
find out cause the students eighth grades of SMPN 1 Baros made a spelling error. 
This is qualitative research. The subject of this research were taken from test and 
interview. This test is used using dictogloss technique to know the types of students 
spelling error made by students grade eighth of SMPN 1 Baros. The researcher 
describes the types of spelling error using percentage. Then, the interview is used 
to support this research in order to know the causes of students’ spelling error. 
Based on the result of this research, the students’ made 8 types of spelling error, 
even though in different percentage. There are 76 errors of omission of letter 
(18,50%.), 51 errors of omission of letter (12,40%), There are 11 errors of single 
letter instead of double letter (2,69%), 20 errors of double letter instead of single 
letter (4,87%), 72 errors of substitution of one letter (17,51%), 12 errors of 
interchange of two adjacent letter (2,91%), 32 errors of erroneous splitting or 
joining of words (word segmentation error) (7,78%), and 137 errors of two or 
more error of the same type or different type (multiple error) (33,34%). In addition, 
based on interview the reason why students faced difficulties in writing narrative 
text are caused by intralingual error, interlingual error, and lack of students’ desire 
to learn correct spelling.</note>
