An Analysis of Cohesion and Coherence in Writing Descriptive Paragraphs


This study aims to find out what types of cohesion are frequent used by eighth grade of MTs Al Mahdi in descriptive paragraphs and also find out how students’ ability to make coherent descriptive paragraphs. Types cohesion focuses on grammatical cohesion (reference, substitution, ellipsis, and conjunction), and lexical cohesion (reiteration and collocation). Coherent focus on repeated key nouns, use consistent pronoun, use transition signal and arrange your ideas logical order. This research is a analysis content. Sampling is done by analysing the result of descriptive writing of students paragraphs with a total of 19 people. Data obtained by conducting written tests on students. That result of this study indicted that there are 40 conjunctions used in students descriptive paragraphs followed by as many reference 36 times, ellipsis 2 times, while substitution only once in grammatical cohesion. On lexical cohesion, it was obtained 37 times reiteration and 28 times collocation. Then, students already have a good ability in making their text coherent although there are still a few errors, followed by 10 other students who are already able to make coherent text well but there are still 9 students who still have to be improve ability so can make the text true.
