<note>This research investigates the ability of eleventh-grade students at SMA
Negeri 1 Waringinkurung to construct conditional sentences. The study
involves a sample of 32 students and aims to assess their proficiency in
constructing such sentences, as well as identify the most challenging aspects
of conditional sentence construction. The research utilizes qualitative content
analysis as its methodology, employing administered tests and interviews as
instruments. The assessment results indicate that the students possess a good
ability in constructing conditional sentences, with an average score of
71.75%. The students demonstrated competence in constructing correct
conditional sentences, accumulating a total of 2296 points for correct
answers. However, there were 904 points deducted for incorrect answers,
indicating areas requiring improvement. Among the common mistakes, verb
tenses accounted for 272 errors, followed by the use of modal verbs with 128
errors. The formula of conditional sentences and the identification of main
and if clauses presented fewer difficulties, with only 7 mistakes each.
Additionally, there were 20 mistakes related to word order. Furthermore,
interviews conducted with 12 students revealed that the most difficult part of
the test for them was verb tenses. Detailed analysis uncovered that students
struggled with selecting the appropriate verb tenses for different types of
conditional sentences. Nonetheless, this suggests that the majority of students
possess a strong grasp of other aspects of language. These findings shed light
on specific areas where students encountered challenges in constructing
conditional sentences. By identifying these difficulties, educators can focus
on addressing them effectively to enhance students' overall proficiency in
constructing conditional sentences.</note>
