Teacher's Difficulties in Teaching English Speaking Skill to Autism Spectrum Disorder Students in an Inclusive Setting (A Case Study at SMP Mutiara Bunda Cilegon)
This study aimed to find out the difficulties that the English teacher faces in teaching English speaking skill to autism spectrum disorder (ASD) students in an inclusive setting and the solutions English teacher uses to deal with the difficulties. The formulated problems of this study were: (1) What are the difficulties that the English teacher faces in teaching English speaking skill to autism spectrum disorder students in an inclusive setting? (2) What are the solutions that the English teacher uses in solving the difficulties in teaching English speaking skill to autism spectrum disorder students in an inclusive setting? This research was conducted through qualitative research with case study method. One English teacher who teach in seventh grade participated in this study as a participant during the observation and interview. Other ones are supporting teacher of seventh grade and three seventh-grade students with autism spectrum disorder, they took part as participants during observation. The result shows that the difficulties the English teacher faced in teaching English speaking skill are related to the behaviour and competence of ASD students. In overcoming those difficulties, the English teacher needed the help of a co-teacher/assistant and applied approach also strategies appropriate to the ASD students' needs.
