<note>The objective of the study was to know empirical evidence whether using the Student Teams Achievement Divisions (STAD) method was effective or not for students in learning English. There are 56 grade eighth students of SMPN 1 Karangtanjung who have been chosen from two classes VIIIC as an experimental class and VIIIB as a controlled class. It started with interview for both classes, treatment manipulation in experiment class and last conducted the questionnaire. The data was collcected by questionnaire and interview by using the t-test formula. The result of statistical calculation showed, the value of to is 5,38. With the degree of freedom (df) is 54 is gained the value 1.67 and 2.39 on the degree of significance 5% and1% of the table. Comparing the gained value of to with ttable, it can be seen that there is an obvious differences among the score of experiment class and control class. The to value is higher than the ttable, namely 1.67 < 5,38 or 5,38 > 2.39, hence the alternative hypothesıs (Ha) is accepted and the null hypothesis (Ho) is rejected. Consequently, it has been proven that the using of Student Teams Achievement Divisions (STAD) method is effective for students of SMPN 1 Karangtanjung in students motivation on learning English.</note>
