Students' motivation in learning English (a case study at tenth grade of MAN 1 Cilegon)
The paper of English Education Department at Faculty of Education and Teacher Treaining of State Islamic University Sultan Mulana Hasanudin Banten, 2019/2020. Motivation is a key concept to be success in learning. In line, this study tried to investigate students’ motivation in learning English, whether they had intrinsic or extrinsic motivation. The study was conducted at tenth grade of MAN 1 Cilegon. The sample of this study was 20 students from tenth grade. Furthermore, the instrument used to collect the data is questionnaire. The questionnaire consists of 20 questions in which question 1-10 are questions for intrinsic motivation and question 10-11 are questions for extrinsic motivation and also 10 open questionnaire to collect the information about the students’ motivation and the factors that influence students’ motivation in learning English. The result of this study shows that the total mean score of intrinsic motivation is higher than the total mean score of extrinsic motivation 3.92 ˃ 3.49. It means that students at tenth grade of MAN 1 Cilegon had higher intrinsic motivation than extrinsic motivation in learning English. In other words, the motivation to learn English that comes from inside students was bigger than the motivation comes from outside students.
