Ed., and As’ari, S.S., M.Si. ABSTRACT This research designed to find out the effectiveness of using picture in teaching speaking skills. The research conducted based on the main problems: 1) How is the students’ skills in speaking English of first grade MTs Nurul Haq Balaraja ? 2) How is the application of teaching speaking skill using picture at MTs Nurul Haq Balaraja ? 3) How is the effectiveness of using pictures in teaching speaking skill at MTs Nurul Haq Balaraja ?. This research oriented the following objectives: 1) To know the students speaking skill of the first grade students of MTs Nurul Haq Balaraja. 2) To findout the application of teaching speaking skill using pictures at MTs NUrul Haq Balaraja. 3) To describe the effectiveness of using pictures in teaching speaking skill at MTs Nurul Haq Balaraja. As a sample of this research is 30 students of VII 2, which taught using pictures. The Instruments used to collect the data is test, the test is used to know students’ achievement before and after experiment. After getting the data from pre-test and post-test of experimental class, the researcher analysis and calculates by using statistic calculation of the t-test formula with significant degree 5% = 1,684 and 1% = 2,425 with degree of freedom 31. According to the result of statistical calculation is obtained the value of t_0 (t observation) is higher that t_t 1,684 2,425. The result of testing hypothesis show that H_a is accepted and H_0 is rejected.
