The Students’ Perception on Speaking Assessment (Descriptive Qualitative Research at Eight Grade Students)


This study aimed to identify the students’ perceptions on their speaking assessment conducted by their teachers during the class. The indicator of the assessment of the English teacher is the effect of the English teacher’s speaking assessment on the students’ motivation after being given a score by the teacher. This research used Qualitative Research Design, the data was obtained by two instruments are observation and open-ended questionnaire. The population of this research were all Eight Grade students of SMP N 4 Cilegon. The sample of the reseach is 10% of the population (27 students of Eight grade). Based on the result of the study, most students gave positive response to the speaking assessment that applied by teacher in teaching and learning activities. This study found that students have a good perception on teacher’s speaking assessment. They realize that speaking is an important skill in English to be mastered well. They argued that speaking is important skill to communicate each other especially as the International and global language used in the world. Unfortunately, most of them can’t speak English well and fluently. Unfortunately, many students also considered that speaking is difficult to be mastered because of some aspects such as limited vocabulary, less understanding of grammar and also the pronunciation which cannot practice well. In other words, the teacher’s speaking assessment is usefull in their teaching and learning process.
