The Relationship Between Studens’ Level of Self-Esteem and their Speech Anxiety (The Correlative Study at SMK Perintis 1 Sepatan)


This study aims to determine whether the relationship between students' self-esteem levels and students' levels of speech anxiety in language skills. The sample used was 30 tenth grade vocational students who faced the transition of learning from junior to senior with more serious subject matter. Researchers collected data through RSES questionnaires to determine self-esteem levels and FLCAS to determine students' speech anxiety levels were analysed with the Pearson correlation coefficient. The results revealed that students with high self-esteem numbered 18 (60%) and students with low self-esteem 12 (40%), with an average score of 15.77 and speech anxiety in the categories of very relaxed 2 (7%), relaxed 9 (30%), somewhat anxious 17 (57%), anxious 2 (7%), and very anxious 0 (0%) with an average score of 88.97. The finding of the correlation coefficient (rxy) data is 0.401 so the result of this study is a relatively low relationship between self-esteem levels and students' speaking anxiety.
