Investigating Students’ Speaking English Problems in EFL Classroom (A Qualitative Research at Eleventh Grade of SMAN 3 Pandeglang


This research aims to investigate the students’ speaking English problems in EFL classroom. The formulated of this research were: (1) What are the problems of students’ speaking English in EFL classroom? (2) How do students overcome their speaking problems? and (3) What are the teacher strategies to solve the students’ problems in speaking English? This research was conducted through qualitative research. The research took the students of XI IPS 2 as respondents which consists 30 students. The researcher used questionnaire and interview to collect the data. Based on the result there are 30 respondents has filled in and given the answer on questionnaires. The result found that some difficulties faced by students in speaking English, there are: linguistics problems and psychological problems. Linguistics problems consist of vocabulary, grammar, and pronunciation. Furthermore, the psychological problems consist of lack of confidence, fear of mistakes, anxiety, and shyness. The result of interview most of students said that memorizing the vocabulary can overcome their problems in speaking English. In addition, the teacher used role plays and dialogue as the strategies to solve speaking problems that faced by students. This research showed that students have some problems in speaking English, teacher should be stimulating students’ responses to improve students’ speaking skill.
