The Influence of PQ4R Strategy to Improve Students’ Reading Comprehension on Descriptive Text (A Quasi Experimental Research at the eighth grade of SMP Daarul Yaqiin Cipocok Jaya Serang)


The main aims of this study was to examine the influence of the PQ4R strategy in improving students' reading comprehension. The researcher used quasi experimental as the research method in order to investigate whether students' reading comprehension in experimental class can improve gradually after receiving treatment by using PQ4R strategy. The researcher employed observation, interview, and reading comprehension test were employed as research instruments. The researcher used t-test to analyze and interpret data before doing hypothesis testing. In practice, there were 60 students involved as sample of this study and they did pre-test and post-test. This finding of this study showed that t0 > tt or 13,75 > 1,67. It means that the the alternative hypothesis (Ha) was accepted while the null hypothesis (H0) was also rejected. In other words, it may be concluded that PQ4R strategy is significantly improves students' reading comprehension at the eighth grade of SMP Daarul Yaqiin Cipocok Jaya Serang. In addition, in qualitative sense, the finding of this study also revealed that PQ4R strategy was very flexible and easy to use for teacher and students in learning process by giving opportunity for them to comprehend the descriptive texts and its language features thoroughly through sequence of reading activities such as preview, question, read, reflect, recite, and review. Besides, this strategy was also adaptable and fit to subject matter and learning objectives in syllabus.
