A Morphological Analysis of Neologism English Found During the COVID-19 Pandemic
This research is carried out to investigate the kind of word formation process on the new English words that are found during the COVID-19 pandemic, and to investigate which types of word-formation appear the most in this research. The method used in this study is descriptive discourse analysis. The data is collected from 10 online news articles, namely Visual Thesaurus, Daily Mail UK, WHO News, BBC, CNN, Economic Times, Cyprus Mail, In Clean Magazine, NBC Philadelphia, and Health Line. The result showed that there were 64 English words collected during COVID-19 Pandemic. The most word-formation type appearing in this research hierarchically is the multiple process (32.81%), blending (20.31%), compounding (20.31%), acronym (9.38%), clipping (6.25%), borrowing (4.47%), affixation (3.13%), and coinage (3.13%). The study also implies that it may be useful for language scholars and educators who are interested in the evolution of language and the impact of global events on language use. Additionally, this research may be of interest to people who are curious about the language changes that have occurred during the COVID-19 pandemic.
