Teacher Pedagogical Competences in Teaching Reading (A Case Study at The Tenth Grade of SMKN 3 Cilegon)


This study aims to analyze the problems that occur in students' reading comprehension learning and analyze the strategies used by teachers to improve the reading comprehension of tenth graders of SMKN 3 Cilegon. This research uses a case study. Data collection techniques were carried out by classroom observation and interviews. The results of this study indicate that there are several problems or obstacles faced by some students in the process of improving reading comprehension in English, including: (1) Difficulty in pronunciation, (2) Less of vocabulary, (3) Lack of confidence, (4) Mindset of students who feel that English is foreign and difficult. Meanwhile, the second finding explains that there are two strategies used by each teacher in the tenth grade of SMKN 3 Cilegon, namely: (1) Giving Literacy Assignments Freely but In Accordance with Teaching Materials, and (2) Small Groups Discussion Technique. Thus, students will often practice to improve their ability in reading comprehension in English and teachers can also find out how far their students' reading comprehension has increased after they apply these strategies.
