AN ANALYSIS OF ENGLISH TEACHER PROFESSIONAL COMPETENCE BASED ON STUDENTS’ PERCEPTION (A Case Study in XI Grade MAN 1 Kota Cilegon)


This study investigate the professional competence of English teachers. This
research aims to: (1) to know the professional competence on English teachers of
eleventh grade; (2) to know students how well they understand the teaching of
English teachers in the eleventh grade. This study uses qualitative research method.
The instruments used in this research are document analysis, observation and
interviews. The respondents in this study were the principal, vice principal, English
teachers and the eleventh grade students of MAN 1 Kota Cilegon, totaling 32
students. The findings of this study are students can understand the exposure to the
material given by the teachers, but feel bored with the learning media provided.
Based on the findings above, it can be concluded that the professional competence
of English teachers is in the very good category. However, because students
sometimes feel bored with the learning media provided, the researcher proposes
topics for human resource development programs, namely “I am a Creative
Teacher”, “I am a Great Teacher”, “I am a Technology Literacy Teacher” and “I
am Today’s Teacher”
