AN ANALYSIS OF EXPRESSIVE SPEECH ACTS OF MAIN CHARACTER IN DISMISSED MOVIE
Dismissed is a 2017 independent thriller film directed by Benjamin Arfmann. This
movie tells about a student who obsessed to get an A. The aim of the study is to
identify the kinds of expressive speech act used by the main character in Dismissed
movie and to find out the most dominant kind of expressive speech act used by the
main character in Dismissed movie. The method used in this study is a descriptive
qualitative research. The data are purposively chosen in order to answer the research
question. This research focuses on expressive speech act uttered by Lucas Ward as
main character in Dismissed movie and focuses on six kinds of expressive speech
act, there are expressive of thanking, expressive of apologizing, expressive of
congratulating, expressive of greeting, expressive of wishing, and expressive of
attitude. The researcher uses script of Dismissed movie to collect the data. The result
of this research is the researcher only found five kinds of expressive speech acts used
by Lucas Ward in Dismissed movie and there are 21 utterances as follow: 6
expressive of thanking, 2 expressive of apologizing, 2 expressive of greeting, 6
expressive of wishing, and 5 expressive of attitudes. The most dominant of
expressive speech act used by Lucas Ward in Dismissed movie is expressive of
thanking and expressive of wishing. Based on the result above, It can be concluded
that Lucas Ward in Dismissed movie using the expressive of thanking because he
want to show an expression of gratitude and expressive of wishing to show an
expression of desire.
