Non-English Department Students' Difficulties on TOEFL Test in Reading Section (A Case Study at Islamic Education Department of UIN SMH Banten)


This study aims to analyze the difficulties faced by non-English students in the reading section of the TOEFL, especially in reading skills. This study used a case study by 30 students of the Islamic Education Department at the State Islamic University of Sultan Maulana Hasanuddin Banten in the eighth semester who have taken the TOEFL. The instrument used in this study was document analysis which taken form students worksheet of the TOEFL reading test results obtained at the Language Development Center and interviews. The results of this study found that using context to determine the meaning of simple words was the most difficult reading skill for test takers (Islamic Education Department students). Meanwhile, the difficulties faced by non-English students, especially students of Islamic Education Department on the TOEFL test in the reading section, were the lack of vocabulary mastery, lack of skills in reading, and lack of motivation and learning of English, especially reading.
