An analysis students’ difficulties in listening (A case study at the second grade of SMAN 3 Pandeglang)


The aims of this study were to find out the difficulties that mostly faced by students in learning listening and find out the reason of students’ difficulties in learning listening. The formulated problems of this study were: (1) What are the levels of students’ difficulties in listening? (2) What are the difficulties faced by students in learning listening at SMA 3 Pandeglang? (3) What are the sources of difficulties in learning listening? This study employed the qualitative research approach with case study method. Qualitative method was chosen because this study aims to analyze cases of students’ difficulty in listening comprehension. The participants of the research are 6 students from XI IPA 2 class. The data of analysis students’ difficulties in listening were obtained by test and interview. The result of the study showed that the total frequency of the score range of the respondents in answer the test of listening, the average score is 0.34 %. So, it can be concluded that students’ difficulty level in listening is categorized into “low” level (0 – 59 %), while students’ difficulties in listening are vocabularies, speed, and interpretation. Some factors that cause students’ difficulties in listening are teacher does not teach listening intensively, students’ do not listen English sounds very often, students’ do not have background knowledge about the content of the cassettes
