An analysis of figurative language in Westlife's songs


This study is about an analysis of figurative language in Westlife’s songs. This study aimed to identify of figurative language in Westlife’s songs, describe the meaning of figurative language in Westlife’s songs and disclose the dominant types of figurative language that used in those songs. This study used qualitative method. The data were obtained from Westlife’s songs that contained in Westlife’s songs; Soledad, You raise me up, Nothing’s going to change my love for you, and I’m already there. By using figurative language theory of Perrine, the researcher observed the song lyric and took the sentences that contained figurative language. From the analysis, the researcher finds that figurative language that used in Westlife’s songs varied considerably. They are the meanings of those figurative language meaning is also varied such as; hyperbole, metaphor, personification, synecdoche and simile has founded in Westlife’s songs. From the analysis of figurative language which used in lyrics of Westlife’s selected songs is “Hyperbole” that has to produce the images in reader or listener mind and to explain ideas, emotions, and the images in a more efficient way than through plain language. There are 31 data that have found, 18 data of hyperbole, 4 data of personification, 1 data of synecdoche, 7 data of metaphor and 1 data of simile. It can be conclude that the dominant types of figurative language in those songs is hyperbole.
