Direct and indirect learning strategies on students’ speaking skill (A case study at 2nd semester students of UIN Banten)


This research aims to explain the frequently and infrequently direct and indirect learning strategies used by students in speaking skill and how they use it in daily life or classroom. The researcher use qualitative research design in this research. The data result obtained from students answer on the 12 interview questions and 30 questionnaire statements (adopted by R. Oxford. 1989), all of both related to direct and indirect learning strategies. This research involves 34 at second semester students of English Education Department in class B of UIN Banten as samples. The result of this research showed that in direct learning strategies the students frequently used memory strategies on their speaking skill and infrequently used by students are cognitive and compensation strategies. While, in indirect learning strategies the students frequently used social strategies on their speaking skill and infrequently used by students are metacognitive and affective strategies. In memory strategies, the students review their English speaking often, watch English language TV program, listen to English song then try to speaking in English.
