Applying self-assessment for investigating students’ reading behaviors (A case study at the ninth grade of SMP Muhammadiyah Serang-Banten The Academic Year of 2019/2020)
The researcher investigated the application of self-assessment for students’ reading behaviors using KWL (Know-What-Learned) framework at SMP Muhammadiyah Serang. It was conducted based on the main problems. 1) How is the implementation of using self-assessment on students’ reading behaviors? 2) How is the impact of using self-assessment for students’ reading behaviors? 3) How are students’ responses about self-assessment on reading behaviors?. The researcher designed in this study was case study research with a qualitative approach. The researcher collected the data from one English teacher and six students. The instruments were observation and interview. The result showed that self-assessment method helped students in the process of learning English, especially in reading skills. Self-assessment methods also succeed in stimulating student knowledge and can motivate students in the process of reading behavior. To some extent, the teacher already followed the procedure of conducting selfassessment in the classroom. However, to some extent, the teacher also violated the procedures in terms of her inconsistency in conducting self-assessment in the classroom. The students also gave positive responses and attitudes about the impact of using self-assessment. Nevertheless, there is some negative response from students who stated that they did not know what exactly a function of selfassessment.
